Program Overview: Disfigurement can happen to anyone, from multiple causes. The impact of disfigurement has received scant attention in psychology. This presentation, led by a facially different psychologist, will address the social stigma of disfigurement, the burgeoning “Face Equality” movement, and ways psychologists can improve the lives of people with facial difference.
Lise Deguire, Psy. D. Dr. Lise Deguire is a psychologist, author, childhood burn survivor, and author of the multiple award-winning book, Flashback Girl: Lessons on Resilience from a Burn Survivor. Dr. Deguire has appeared on NPR, NBC, ABC, and FOX. She is a TEDx speaker (“SCARRED not Scary”), a national keynote speaker and has presented for The American Psychological Association, the World Burn Congress, The Security and Exchange Commission, and The American Burn Association. Her written work has been featured in Psychology Today, Huffington Post, The Psychotherapy Networker, and Thrive Global. She received two artist residency grants at Craigarden. Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Name 4 ways disfigured people experience discrimination.
2. Describe the equal rights movement for the facially different.
3. List 3 elements of positively interacting with the facially different.

This program’s level of learning: This is an introductory lecture on disfigurement and the social stigma faced by disfigured people. This introductory lecture cannot cover all the issues faced by this population.
