Program: This webinar will introduce participants to empirically supported and creative therapeutic strategies for promoting an enhanced resilience response for children who struggle with dysregulation during the global pandemic. Examples of therapeutic attention for trauma related memory, dysregulation, optimal parenting approaches to help children, and the promotion of expressive capacity for children who have difficulty putting feelings into words will be provided in case presentation and discussion.

Presenter: Robert Miller II, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist practicing in Princeton and Montclair, New Jersey. Dr. Miller provides child, adolescent, and adult psychotherapy, trauma centered therapy, couples and student counseling as well as parenting and family consultation. Dr. Miller is a recognized expert witness in forensic child psychology and bonding who provides testimony to the court in child protection matters and consultation regarding adoption issues.                                                                                                                                            

Learning Objectives

Define (4) empirically derived domains of functioning for enhancing multidimensional resilience response during the pandemic for children who struggle with trauma related illness in the context of family and peer relationships.

Define culturally competent trauma assessment beyond the DSM system including description of intergenerational trauma and racial trauma.

Identify an expressive age appropriate developmental continuum for representational modes to enhance the therapeutic use of exposure methods for addressing trauma schemas in the treatment of trauma related illness.

Provide participants with an empirically supported rationale and case examples for the use of Creative Arts Therapies (art, music, dance, drama, poetry) in the treatment of trauma related problems for children. Creative approaches including narrative storytelling, improvisation, pretend play, and performance arts to promote a resilience response in children will be described in this presentation.

Target Audience:  Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Creative Arts Therapists, Nurses, Physicians, Educators, Mental Health Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Teachers and Graduate Students.                                                                                                                                                            Program Sophistication: Intermediate- Some basic knowledge of the specific content is required.  Commercial Support:  Dr. Miller does not have any commercial support and/or conflict of interest for this program.
